Australian Pinzgauer Breeder's Association

The Australian Pinzgauer Breeders Association (APBA) manages the herdbook of the Pinzgauer breed in Australia.

The administration of the herdbook is done by the Livestock and Business Centre in Shellharbour, NSW, Australia.

The herdbook offers a grading up program whereby crosses are marked as F1, F2, F3 and F4. For females, an F4 is classified in the herdbook as a Purebred, for bulls it has to be the F5 cross. This system now also applies in the European Union to all national Pinzgauer studbooks.

Until a few years ago the APBA had an additional classification in the studbook - "Fullblood" - for animals that had come from the lines originally imported from Austria into Canada and the United States and from there to Australia. The "Fullblood" classification followed the system available in the United States and Canada. If desired, Purebred animals can still be traced back through the online pedigree database to see whether they came from "Fullblood" stock.

Some breeders in Australia recognised a while ago that introducing polled genetics into the breed would be important for its future. This has been achieved with the descendants from two Austrian bulls bred by farmer "Haller" in the 80s, and most of our animals with the exception of a few where poll came from a breeding up program now trace back to these animals.
