FAIRFIELD'S HISTORY

A long history as a dairy

The Alexander family lease-farmed in the area since the mid 1800s and then bought the block in approximately 1895 as the core of their dairy operation. In 1915 the Alexanders built a house on Fairfield they named "Goldenville".

In the post-war years "Goldenville" underwent various additions and modifications that did not try to maintain the house's historic character, as such endeavours were hampered by economic conditions.

From the early 1900s the Alexanders bred Illawarra Red Dairy Cattle and won various prices at the local shows. This is well documented in the book "Kiama on Show".
Fairfield was a sizeable dairy farm, milking up to 260 cows at the height of the operation. Additional blocks around Fairfield were under lease to be able to stock those numbers. Fairfield Dairies closed its doors in 2005, and the property was leased out for beef breeding.

In 2015, Trevor Alexander, the last of this line of Alexanders to live on the property, decided to sell up, and we were very lucky he gave us the opportunity to become the new custodians for this wonderful and very productive peace of land.

We are now in the process of renovating. Unfortunately it was not possible to restore the old house, but we retained some of its bones in the tranformation to a functional modern farmhouse.
