PLANS FOR SUSTAINABLE FARMING ON FAIRFIELD

Cattle

Our goals for our cattle are to build the best possible Pinzgauer stud herd in Australia by being rigorous in our selection process whilst balancing that with the need to retain as wide a genepool as possible. We have imported some semen from Austrian Bulls and are hoping for some success with an AI program this year.

We intend to also run a small breeding-up program with a group of high quality black Angus heifers and bring some more black and white poll genetics into the herd in this way.

Landcare

We are in an area of very high gusty winds for a lot of the year, and the provision of shelter belt for the cattle to improve their wellbeing is important. We have started working with Landcare Illawarra to commence planting and are approaching our first 1000 tubestock. We greatly appreciate the expert help and provision of plant material from local seed stock through Landcare Illawarra.

Pasture Management

Our pastures are subtropical Kikuyu based. We are learning how to manage this grass in combination with Rye grass oversowing for the winter months to achieve the best possible utilisation by the cattle in a rotation system.
